Steve Bilt is the co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of OneSmile, LLC. He was President & Chief Executive Officer of Smile Brands Inc from 2000 until 2014. As co-founder of Smile Brands, Steve also served as the company’s Chief Financial Officer from inception in 1998 through 1999 and was Chairman of the Smiles for Everyone Foundation from its inception in 2005 until 2014. Steve was integral in the company’s three initial platform acquisitions and led the acquisitions of Monarch Dental [NASDAQ: MDDS] and Castle Dental [NASDAQ: CASL]. In addition to these transactions, Steve oversaw the development and operationalization of 150 de novo practices. During Steve’s tenure, Smile Brands spent over a decade as the largest company in its sector and had annual revenues exceeding $500 million and 5,500 employees and providers in approximately 400 locations.
Before joining Smile Brands, Steve was Vice President Finance for Vivra Incorporated (NYSE: V), an operator of 250 dialysis clinics in 29 states and specialty physician networks and practices in 15 states. Vivra was the second-largest provider of outpatient kidney dialysis services in the United States, caring for approximately 15,000 end-stage renal disease patients. He was with Vivra during its growth from approximately $150 million in annual revenues to over $700 million and through its successful sale. Steve oversaw M&A activities, corporate finance, and certain specialty business units.
Previously, Steve was Chief Financial Officer at SCRS, Inc., a provider of speech, occupational, and physical therapy with 70 locations in 10 states. SCRS provided rehabilitation therapy to approximately 40,000 patients annually, primarily in the skilled nursing environment. He participated with SCRS in its growth from $4 million in annual revenues to over $70 million. Earlier in his career, as a manager with Ernst & Young, he provided services to high-growth technology and healthcare organizations.
Steve was named Entrepreneur of the Year in an international program honoring business leaders who have created and sustained successful companies and is a member of the Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame and Academy. Founded by $20 billion professional services firm Ernst & Young, the Entrepreneur of the Year program is co-sponsored nationally by SAP and the Kauffman Foundation. Steve was also honored with the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award from the Orange County Business Journal for his role in founding and developing Smile Brands Inc. and led the Smiles for Everyone Foundation to two American Red Cross Humanitarian Awards and numerous other international awards related to its ongoing services, including recognition by the Governments and /or Monarchies of Paraguay, Thailand, and Ghana. Additionally, Steve led Smile Brands to be honored with Inc. Magazine’s Inaugural Hire Power Award for creating and sustaining job growth, numerous inclusions on Inc’s Fastest Growing Companies in America list and in 2013 was honored by CEO Connection and the Wharton School as Mid-Market CEO of the Year for Social Impact.
Steve received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Graziadio School of Business and Management at Pepperdine University and completed the Harvard Business School Presidents’ Program. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of California. Steve was a founding member, former President and Executive Board Member of the Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) and has been a member of the Pepperdine University Board of Visitors. Steve serves on the Board, Audit Committee and Strategic Planning Committee for THINK Together, the largest non-profit after-school education program in the United States. In addition, Steve is a long time Board member of the Young Presidents Organization, an international association for chief executives. Outside of his community and professional activities, Steve enjoys scuba diving, mountain climbing, travel and spending time with his family.
Brad Schmidt is the co-Founder and Chief Financial Officer of OneSmile, LLC. Prior to OneSmile, Brad was with Smile Brands from 1998 through 2013 where he initially served as the company’s Controller and then subsequently as Chief Financial Officer for over a decade. While under Brad’s financial leadership, Smile Brands grew from a start-up to the largest dental support services organization in the United States servicing approximately 400 dental practices with annual revenues greater than $500 million. In supporting the company’s growth, Brad played a leading role in the integration of the company’s three initial platform acquisitions and Smile Brand’s subsequent acquisitions of Monarch Dental and Castle Dental. He also oversaw the company’s initial de novo expansion efforts, which led to the successful development of more than 150 practices. In addition to overseeing M&A, integration and de novo development activities, Brad led the development and optimization of the company’s support services infrastructure across a wide range of functions including, accounting, finance, tax, business analytics, procurement, patient financing and real estate. Beyond his functional responsibilities, Brad led several cross functional teams and partnered closely with practice owners and the dental operations team to drive dozens of revenue enhancement, process optimization, technology implementation and cost management initiatives.
Before joining Smile Brands, Brad served as Division Controller and Corporate Accounting Manager for Furon Company (NYSE: FCY), a $450 million international designer and manufacturer of engineered high-performance polymer products. Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Accountant with Ernst & Young, where he worked with and provided services to a wide range of private and publicly held companies.
Brad received his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Eastern Michigan University, which he attended on a full athletic scholarship. Brad was a 2011 Orange County CFO of the Year finalist, awarded by the Orange County Business Journal in association with CalCPA and Price Waterhouse Coopers. He also serves on the Board of SCP Dental Services, a DSO operating in the Chicago area. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys spending time with his wife, family and friends, skiing, snowmobiling, boating, hiking, hunting, fishing and any other activity that allows him to experience the great outdoors. Brad resides in the Seattle area with his wife and two step-children.
Patrick Costello is the Director of Business Development for OneSmile, LLC. Prior to OneSmile, he was a Senior Consultant for the Private Equity Value Creation group at Ernst & Young (EY). At EY, Patrick consulted with public and private companies to improve their operations following transformative events such as mergers and acquisitions. Patrick also provided operational due diligence to buy-side private equity clients.
Prior to joining EY, Patrick partnered with Dr. Barry Karlin (founder of CRC Health Group, formerly a Bain Capital Company) and two other former CRC Health Group executives to found Prospira PainCare, a private equity-backed healthcare services company. Prospira PainCare provides integrated, multi-specialty pain management services for acute, chronic or intractable pain though a network of world-class providers in five states. As Director of Business Development, Patrick led the acquisitions of four multi-site regional platforms and three follow-on acquisitions which generated net revenues of over $55 million. Post-acquisition, Patrick collaborated with physician leaders to accelerate the growth of the acquired practices through the development of de novo locations and the introduction additional services for their existing patients.
Prior to joining Prospira PainCare, Patrick was a Senior Associate at Gryphon Investors, a San Francisco based private equity group with over $1 billion of committed equity capital, where he was responsible for executing and monitoring investments in the healthcare services industry, focusing on sectors such as physical therapy, dental services, addictions treatment, clinical research and healthcare information technology. Before joining Gryphon Investors, Patrick was an analyst in the Healthcare Group of Piper Jaffray, a Minneapolis based investment bank, where he executed buy and sell-side M&A assignments, initial public offerings, and private placements within the healthcare services, biotech and biopharma sectors.
Patrick received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Computer Science from Bowdoin College in Brunswick Maine. Outside of his professional life, he enjoys skiing, running, golfing and is a diehard fan of the Patriots and Red Sox. Originally from the Boston area, Patrick now resides in Newport Beach, CA with his wife and son.
